UK School Assistant

Are you willing to work flexibly and use your initiative to get involved in all aspects of school life?

Education placement at a traditional boarding schools for young people with visual impairment. Students live on campus during term time, and the volunteer role focuses on boarding house duties, such as wake-ups, supervising meals, laundry, organizing bedtimes and other housekeeping tasks. Volunteers will also assist with homework clubs, evening and weekend activities and clubs, sports and excursions. There will also be duties during the school day, and if you have a skill, like language, art, music, drama or sports, there will be opportunities to assist relevant departments.

Locations

The schools are mainly in rural or small-town settings in the Scottish Highlands, Yorkshire, Kent, Hampshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire and Hereford.

Work Schedule

Expect to be a busy and valued team member during term time. Volunteers have plenty of opportunities to explore the UK and Europe during the school holidays.

Reimbursement

Volunteers are reimbursed weekly towards their fees, flights, visa and travel insurance during placement. The reimbursement amount varies.

Food & Accommodation

Volunteers have access to a shared kitchen, but mostly share meals with the team in the dining hall, where traditional English food is served (expect fish and chips). The school caters for a wide range of dietary requirements. You will have a private room on campus, which could be in the boarding house or a staff flat, and a bathroom shared with other staff members.

A youth work charity providing emergency shelter and support to vulnerable and homeless young people aged 16-25. Volunteers help provide accommodation, food and a safe place to be for the guests of the homeless shelter. Engaging with, supporting and building appropriate relationships with the young people who use the service is a vital part of the role. Other duties include housekeeping, organising food donations and managing events.

Streetlife is based in Blackpool.

Work Schedule

Streetlife work with shift patterns which allows volunteers plenty of free time.

Volunteers buy and prepare their own food. Streetlife provides a private room in a shared house with 4-5 other staff members, with a shared kitchen and bathroom.

Spain School Language Assistant

Volunteering at a school in Spain offers an exciting opportunity for those interested in Spanish culture, language, education, and working with young people. The primary purpose is to help improve the English skills of Spanish students, so volunteers must be native English speakers. As a School Language Assistant, you will support the English teacher’s lessons in the classroom, running activities such as games and reading stories to help students improve their English skills. No prior experience is required, making it an excellent chance for aspiring teachers and those who want to learn Spanish. Additionally, volunteers will assist in the day-to-day running of the school.

Work Schedule

Volunteers work 15 hours in the classroom each week and have the opportunity to get involved in other aspects of school life. With three-day weekends (Friday-Sunday) and school holidays, there will be plenty of time to explore and experience the local culture.

Income

Volunteers can earn additional income by providing English tuition, which is in high demand. The school is available to assist in arranging tutoring opportunities.

Why NVW charges a fee
New Ventures Worldwide is a UK-registered nonprofit charity. The fee contributes to our operating costs and allows us to continue our mission of arranging volunteering placements for our global network of nonprofit organisations. A financial report is published annually to the UK Charity Commission.

 

What’s included in the fee
The fee includes a sponsored Tier 5 visa, a thoroughly vetted placement, an appropriate volunteer role based on age, experience and interests, a placement mentor, any necessary training, preparation guidance, ongoing support, accommodation, food and a spending allowance.

 

Additional costsย 
In addition to the placement fee, volunteers pay for flights, a visa, and travel insurance, usually costing around $2,500 USD (depending on the departure destination). Volunteers are reimbursed weekly towards their costs during placement. The reimbursement amount varies.

What is the enrollment process?

After completing the application form, our team will check if you are eligible for your chosen program before inviting you to an interview. The interview is where you get to know the New Ventures Worldwide team, ask questions and get matched to your perfect program. Various background checks are then conducted before you are officially enrolled in the program.

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes, you will need travel insurance. Youโ€™ll need to send us your policy details before starting a program.

Do I need a local phone and bank account?

You donโ€™t need a local SIM card, and most volunteers find they can get by on just Wi-Fi. However, having a local bank account is essential for some programs as it is how your reimbursement is paid. The New Ventures Worldwide team and guide you through this process.

What happens if there is a problem during the placement?

New Ventures Worldwide has a Ladder of Support so you can see who to contact if you need help. Your placement will assist you in almost all situations. However, we also offer background support, mainly if a more serious issue arises.
