School Volunteer

650 USD + $125/month accommodation

January, June or September for 5-11 months

Are you seeking an extraordinary opportunity that will push your boundaries, uplift others, and leave a lasting imprint?

Our Ghana placement is perfect for individuals more excited about supporting disadvantaged communities than conventional tourism. As a school volunteer, you can share your enthusiasm for education to students eager to absorb knowledge; this gives volunteers a unique perspective into a different culture while effecting lasting change in the lives of those less fortunate.

In these under-resourced schools, antiquated chalkboards take precedence over modern IT equipment. Volunteers are tasked with crafting bespoke lessons spanning many subjects, be it mathematics, English, science, creative arts, or sports, drawing upon their expertise and passions to make a meaningful impact.

Locations

The schools are in small towns near Cape Coast, one of the country’s most historic cities and a World Heritage Site.

Work Schedule

Volunteers work Monday to Friday, usually with a morning and afternoon shift, and can explore during weekends and school holidays.

Age Requirements

Visa requires volunteers to be at least 17 years old at the point of application.

Fundraising

Volunteers are encouraged to fundraise through their friends, family, and wider networks, to cover their costs and raise money for the school.

Teamwork

Volunteering at a school means working closely with a diverse team of all ages. You’ll always have at least one fellow volunteer by your side while collaborating with the entire local staff team.

Food & Accommodation

Traditional Ghanaian meals are provided by the host family. Staying with a host family in a private or twin room shared with another volunteer can provide a more immersive experience, allowing you to learn more about Ghanaian culture and customs first-hand.

Volunteer Case Study

Kate, an 18-year-old from the United Kingdom, volunteered in Ghana for 3 months, splitting her time between teaching and playing football with students. For three days a week, she taught English, Maths, and Science using textbooks since she had no prior teaching experience. On the remaining two days, she played football with the same students as a reward for attending homework sessions.

“At first, the kids were a handful, but I quickly got used to it. Playing football in the heat was tough, but seeing the girls get just as into it as the boys made it all worth it.”

At the heart of our placements lies the opportunity to assist with health campaigns and education, all while acquiring new skills through shadowing and observing doctors. Given the under-resourced nature of the medical centres, the presence of willing volunteers is truly invaluable.

Based in Cape Coast, Kweku lives with his wife and two kids. Kweku developed a passion for young people’s development when volunteering in 2013, where he gained considerable life skills. He now helps others have the same experience. When he’s not assisting volunteers, Kweku plays the guitar and organ at church and occasionally sings.
